Detractors Advocate for Shut Down of Arbitrum's $220 Million Gaming Venture
At the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2025, Arbitrum showcased its influence with a presentation of its 2024 Transparency Report. The report revealed that 276 projects received funds from the Arbitrum Foundation within the past year, with FinTech and DeFi projects taking the lion's share. However, there was also substantial support given to the "Others" and "Gaming" categories, which received 51 and 44 grants, respectively. The Game Catalyst Program under Fire

Debuting in March 2024 and approved by ARB token holders in June, the GCP was designed to infuse approximately $220 million in tokens over three years to fuel blockchain gaming. However, doubts surfaced regarding the program's effectiveness following Treasure DAO's decision to abandon Arbitrum in favor of zkSync.
By October 2024, concerns about the GCP's performance escalated, prompting Joseph Schiarizzi, an Arbitrum DAO member, to suggest reallocating the remaining $220 million ARB tokens back to the DAO treasury. Schiarizzi denounced the GCP as unproductive, claiming its absence of milestone accomplishments made it "unconscionable."
In defense of the GCP, A.J. Warner, Offchain Labs' director, dismissed the criticism, deeming it illogical. However, persisting doubts have been further heightened by the 77% drop in ARB token value over the past year.
With growing opposition towards the GCP, DAO members like Nathan Van der Hayden are calling for a halt. He argued that, with essential backers now gone, the program isn't fulfilling its commitments, necessitating a retreat to safeguard the treasury.
