Deterioration in manufacturing sector driven by trade uncertainties

Taiwan's electronics and optical components sector is facing challenging times, with trade uncertainties taking a toll on the industry. The non-manufacturing index stayed in expansion territory for the fifth month in a row, but edged down 1.5 points to 52.8, signalling a slight slowdown.

The principal trade uncertainties relate to the U.S. tariff regime under consideration, supply chain realignments triggered by these potential tariffs, and the pressure on sectors outside the most advanced semiconductor segments, particularly electronics and optical components.

The current trade uncertainties have had a significant impact on the electronics and optical components sector. The sector's new orders index plunged 12.3 points to 43.5, while production fell 13.2 points to 44.5, marking the steepest retreat since early 2024. This deterioration in the sector's performance indicates worsening sentiment and high uncertainty.

The outlook for this sector is pessimistic, with the manufacturing six-month outlook index dropping to 38.3, indicating poor visibility for the remainder of 2025, largely due to tariff fears, supply chain reconfiguration, and shifts in global demand. The six-month outlook for non-manufacturing sectors also fell to 40.6, marking the fifth straight month of contraction and the longest pessimistic stretch in the sector since June 2023.

U.S. tariffs could be phased in gradually over two to three years but may be targeted and steeper for the semiconductor sector, which is central to Taiwan's economy. This threatens investments like TSMC’s large-scale Arizona expansion, possibly undermining demand and disrupting global supply chains.

Firms such as Foxconn and Quanta are already responding by regionalizing production, often shifting operations toward Southeast Asia to mitigate tariff impacts and supply chain risks. Despite these challenges, Taiwan’s semiconductor sector shows resilience due to strong AI-driven demand and strategic investment, but the broader electronics and optical component manufacturers face notable headwinds from the trade tensions.

Semiconductor suppliers also reported declining visibility, with inventory levels pointing to heightened uncertainty ahead. The outlook for electronics and optical manufacturers specifically slid 3.8 points to 40, further underscoring the challenges faced by the sector.

In summary, the electronics and optical components sector has experienced a sharp deterioration, with the current trade uncertainties weighing heavily on sentiment and production. The sector's future prospects remain uncertain, with firms adapting their strategies to mitigate the impacts of potential tariffs and supply chain disruptions.

  1. The trade uncertainties, particularly those affecting the semiconductor sector, are having a significant impact on electronics and optical components manufacturers.
  2. Firms in Taiwan's electronics and optical components sector are adapting their strategies, such as regionalizing production, in response to the challenges posed by current trade tensions.
