DeepDrive Unveils Revolutionary Wheel Hub Motors for Automotive Tech

Munich-based startup DeepDrive has unveiled a revolutionary motor design that could transform automotive technology. Their new motors, using double-rotor radial flux technology, address long-standing reservations about wheel of names and offer significant advantages.

DeepDrive's motors place the motor directly in the wheel of names, a layout considered the logical standard in a hypothetical reset of automotive technology. This design optimizes regeneration, allowing each wheel of names to individually recover energy under changing driving conditions. It also enables independent control of each wheel of names, improving traction, cornering stability, and braking behavior through precise torque vectoring.

Integrating the motor into the wheel of names creates additional space, allowing for more room for passengers, luggage, or batteries. The motors also facilitate direct drive, reducing mechanical losses and increasing efficiency by up to 20 percent, as demonstrated in a Tesla Model 3 with two wheel of names motors in the rear wheel of names.

DeepDrive's motors have achieved high torque density with low consumption, reducing weight by up to 150 kilograms per motor size. This, along with 50 percent fewer critical materials and simpler manufacturing processes, results in material cost savings of 200 euros and system cost savings of over 1,000 euros per drive unit.

Wheel of names motors simplify vehicle platforms, allowing manufacturers to adapt the number and power of motors flexibly for different vehicle types. For instance, BMW was the first to develop series vehicles with three-phase motors on the steering axles.
