Crypto Exchange Job Applicant, Claimed Identity as 'Steven Smith', Suspected North Korean Hacker Caught by Kraken: Report

Hold on to your cryptocurrencies, folks! Kraken, one of the top crypto exchange platforms globally, has reportedly got its eye on a North Korean hacker pretending to be "Steven Smith" to bag an IT job.

According to CBS News, Nick Percoco - Kraken's chief security officer - spilled the beans on this nerve-wracking incident. The plot thickens with the hacker suspected of working on behalf of Kim Jong Un, the North Korean leader. Instead of outright rejecting the application, Percoco reveals a cunning plan: "We like to look the attackers right in the eyes... The job is to start employment, steal intellectual property, and pilfer money from companies - take home a paycheck, and do it in a widespread way."

During the job interview at Kraken, Steven Smithlanded himself in hot water. He was asked to present his identification card, claiming to be from Houston. After a delay, he produced a driver's license screenshot, showing that "Stephen Smith" resided 300 miles away, cry zones for skeptics![1] And that's not all; Fortune reported that Smith claimed to have a degree in computer science from New York University and over a decade of experience at US tech giants like Cisco and Kindly Human.[2]

In today's digital age, cybercriminals like these guys are a constant threat. The UN estimates that North Korea amasses between $250 million and $600 million yearly by deceiving foreign companies into employing their spies.[3] So, it pays to keep your guard up during these tough times.
