Consumer Center NRW Warns of Rising Classifieds Scams

Consumer Center NRW has issued warnings about rising scams on classifieds platforms. Fraudsters are exploiting private payments and fake sites accessed via QR codes or links, leading to significant losses for victims.

Ralf Scherfling, an expert at Consumer Center NRW, advises caution when using private emails or alternative payment methods on these platforms. He warns that QR codes and links in emails can direct users to fraudulent sites. In a recent case, a nurse lost €7,000 after being tricked into scanning a 'consumer cellular' QR code for 'secure payment'.

To protect themselves, users should ensure their smartphone displays the QR code first and verify the displayed internet address. A seller also lost €2,970 after scanning a QR code sent via chat, which led to an unauthorized PayPal 'pay'ment. Consumer Center NRW has received numerous complaints about such frauds.

Common scams include waiving buyer protection and private payment handling. Victims should file complaints, freeze their bank accounts, and change access data. Consumer Center NRW offers further information on expected abuse methods and protection against internet crime. Stay vigilant, and always verify the authenticity of QR codes and 'code' before proceeding with any transaction.
