Confirmation on Qi Wireless Charging Capabilities for Google Pixel Watch 4?

In a departure from the expectations of many tech enthusiasts, the upcoming Google Pixel Watch 4 will not support Qi wireless charging. Instead, the company is moving towards a proprietary side-mounted charging system with POGO pins relocated to the left side, requiring a new dedicated charging dock.

Redesigned Charging Solution

Google is ditching the Pixel Watch 3's rear pin charger design for a redesigned side-mounted POGO pin charger, which is not compatible with Qi wireless chargers. Although Google recognizes the appeal of Qi2 magnetic charging (seen in Pixel 10 phones), the Pixel Watch 4 apparently lacks the space to incorporate a Qi-compatible magnet inside.

Improved Charging Speed and Usability

The new dock design aims to improve charging speed (up to 25% faster) and usability, possibly allowing the watch to function as a bedside clock when docked. Existing Pixel Watch chargers are incompatible with the new system, so users will need the new proprietary charger.

Design Prioritization and Convenience

Android smartwatches and fitness watches often prioritize other design aspects over incorporating a Qi charging coil. The lack of a universal wireless charging standard for smartwatches can result in inconvenience for users, as replacement cables can be expensive and hard to find.

Innovation and Repairability

Jitesh Ubrani, IDC's research manager of worldwide device trackers, believes that a mandated wireless charging coil would stifle innovation in other areas of smartwatch design. If accurate, the Pixel Watch 4 will be the third device in four generations of Pixel Watches to use a proprietary cable. However, the redesign may make the Pixel Watch 4 easier to repair compared to the first three generations.

Accessories and Battery Life

There is curiosity about whether accessory makers will be able to make protective cases for the Pixel Watch 4 that don't block the charging pins. Smartwatch designs prioritize battery life over a universal wireless charging standard like Qi, which may lead to longer battery life in the Pixel Watch 4.

The Pixel Watch 4 is abandoning the Qi wireless charging option, instead opting for a proprietary side-mounted charging system. This move follows Google's redesign of the charging solution to improve charging speed and usability, even if it means using a dedicated charging dock and proprietary cable.

The redesigned charging system may also spur innovation and potentially enhance repairability of the Pixel Watch 4, as it separates the device from the universal Qi wireless charging standard prevalent in many gadgets and wearables.
