In a recent incident on September 25, 2025, a 63-year-old man from Emsdetten became a victim of a Microsoft 365 scam. The unfortunate event took place in the afternoon.

The scam began when the victim received a message on his laptop, claiming to be from Microsoft 365. Believing it to be genuine, the man provided his online banking details to the caller, who claimed to be a Microsoft 365 employee.

However, the caller was not who they claimed to be. The victim allowed the caller access to his laptop, which led to several amounts being withdrawn from his account.

The financial damage from the Microsoft 365 scam was in the low four-figure range. The victim's account was subsequently frozen.

In response to this incident, the Steinfurt Police have issued a warning about fake Microsoft 365 employees. Under no circumstances should you give out private data such as bank account or credit card details or login credentials for customer accounts.

The warning also advises against giving out access to your computer in response to unsolicited calls. Serious companies like Microsoft 365 do not contact customers uninvited. If a service employee calls you out of the blue, hang up.
