Cologne Police Warn of Bank Fraud Scheme via Fake QR Code Letters
Police have issued a warning about a current fraud scheme targeting bank customers in Cologne. Letters are being sent, urging recipients to create digital debit cards in their banking apps.
The scam involves customers receiving letters instructing them to update their online banking via a QR code. Upon scanning, they are directed to a fake website where they are prompted to enter personal information, including their debit card PIN.
Customers are then asked to schedule a phone call with an alleged personal advisor. However, there is no indication that this advisor is genuine or connected to their PNC bank. The police warn that fraudsters can use this information to create digital debit cards for customers' accounts, allowing them to make unauthorized withdrawals.
While there is no specific information about banks in Cologne being targeted by postal mail fraud schemes, Volksbank Köln Bonn eG has warned about phishing emails targeting their customers. This suggests a broader range of fraud tactics being employed in the region.
The police urge customers not to react to such letters, scan QR codes, or enter personal information. If you receive a letter asking you to update your online banking, contact your bank directly using a trusted number to verify its authenticity. If you suspect you've fallen victim to this scam, report it to your bank and the police immediately.
