Citroen's Electric Vehicles Qualify for UK's Electric Car Grant

Citroen has announced that six of its electric vehicles, including the new e-C3, e-C4, e-C5 Aircross, e-Berlingo, and e-C4 X, have been approved and are eligible for the UK government's Electric Car Grant (ECG). This means that customers purchasing these vehicles will receive a discount of up to £1,500.

The ECG is a government initiative designed to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles by offering financial incentives to buyers. To qualify for the grant, a car must meet specific environmental and technical criteria, including a price cap of £37,000 or below, warranty terms, battery range, and sustainability standards related to production.

The ECG has two levels of grants. Level 1, with a maximum grant of £3,750, is awarded to vehicles that meet the highest sustainability standards, particularly in terms of environmental impact during both vehicle assembly and battery cell production. Level 2, with a grant of £1,500, is given to vehicles that meet basic environmental criteria but do not achieve the highest sustainability rating.

To qualify for Level 1, manufacturers must demonstrate verified Science Based Targets and prove that carbon emissions from vehicle assembly and battery production are below defined thresholds. This involves meeting strict environmental standards covering the entire lifecycle, including the carbon footprint of battery production, emissions during vehicle assembly, and general sustainable manufacturing practices.

As of early August 2025, no vehicles have yet qualified for the full £3,750 Level 1 grant. However, many models, including Citroen's electric cars, currently qualify for the £1,500 Level 2 grant under the lower sustainability tier.

Greg Taylor, Managing Director of Citroen UK, expressed his welcome for the support of the Electric Car Grant, stating that it makes their electric range more accessible. He added that Citroen is the first automaker to have vehicles in their electric range approved and eligible for the grant.

The discount for Citroen's electric cars will be automatically applied at the time of purchase, and no paperwork is required. The new Citroen e-C3's entry price is now £20,595 due to the grant, making it an affordable option for those looking to transition to electric vehicles. The e-C3 Aircross, arriving in October, will cost from £21,595 with the grant, while the e-C5 Aircross family SUV will also receive £1,500 Level 2 support, and prices will start from £32,565. The e-C4 now starts from £26,150 with the grant, and the e-Berlingo costs from £29,740 with the grant.

Citroen's electric cars are European-built models that have met the necessary technical and environmental criteria for the £1,500 Electric Car Grant. The automaker also offers a 'We Care' package that covers the electric motor, onboard transmission, and all key electrical and mechanical components for up to eight years or 100,000 miles. The drive battery of Citroen's electric vehicles also has an eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty.

In summary, Citroen's electric vehicles have been approved for the UK government's Electric Car Grant, and customers purchasing these vehicles will receive a discount of up to £1,500. The eco-friendliness of both Citroen's electric vehicles and their batteries is a factor in their approval for the grant, making them an attractive option for those looking to adopt more sustainable transportation solutions.

  1. The new Citroen e-C3, with its entry price reduced to £20,595, is now a more accessible electric car option due to the UK's Electric Car Grant.
