Century Lithium Announces Production of Battery-Grade Lithium Metal Anodes Derived from Angel Island Lithium Carbonate

Century Lithium, a Vancouver-based lithium exploration and development company, has made significant strides in the production of battery-grade lithium-metal anodes, thanks to a collaboration with Alpha-En Corporation based in Hopewell Junction, New York.

The progress was made using lithium carbonate sourced from Century Lithium's wholly owned lithium project, Angel Island, located in Esmeralda County, Nevada. The Demonstration Plant, where the production process took place, is situated in nearby Nye County.

In a groundbreaking development, Alpha-En Corporation successfully converted Century Lithium's lithium carbonate into battery-grade lithium-metal anodes. The lithium carbonate was refined to an impressive 99.8% purity before being processed using Alpha-En's patented room-temperature conversion method.

The resulting lithium-metal anodes demonstrated high extraction efficiency and areal capacity, meeting the performance criteria needed for next-generation rechargeable batteries. In pilot tests, Century Lithium's material even exceeded the quality of battery-grade lithium carbonate from a commercial non-domestic source.

This collaboration holds strategic importance for the U.S., strengthening domestic supply chains for lithium-metal anodes, which are crucial for electric vehicles (EVs), electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles (eVTOLs), and stationary energy storage. It reduces dependence on imports and supports the growth of the EV and energy storage sectors.

Alpha-En's process eliminates traditional high-temperature refining and foil coating by converting lithium salts directly into thin-film lithium metal at room temperature, supporting just-in-time production within battery manufacturing lines. This technological advancement is a significant step towards building a resilient domestic lithium supply chain.

Century Lithium, led by President and CEO Bill Willoughby, maintains a positive long-term outlook on lithium-based batteries and believes they will play a critical role in the growth of the electric vehicle and stationary energy storage markets. The company is continuing its collaboration with Alpha-En Corporation for the advancement of the Angel Island project.

Landon Oakes, the Chief Technology Officer of Alpha-En Corporation, oversaw the successful process, resulting in Li-MA with a high areal capacity and extraction efficiency. The high-quality lithium-metal anodes produced from Century Lithium's lithium carbonate have translated into high-quality anodes, showcasing the purity and consistency of the domestic supply.

The company is currently progressing the development of its Angel Island project through ongoing permitting, engineering, and technical development at its Demonstration Plant.
