CD Projekt confirms Cyberpunk 2077's return to animation development
In the dynamics of the cyberpunk realm, it's no secret that Studio Trigger's masterpiece, "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners," played a pivotal role in shifting public perception about the game "Cyberpunk 2077" back in 2022. The critically and award-winning series left an indelible mark and assured CD Projekt Red that animation was a medium they wouldn't abandon.
During their recent earnings call Q&A, co-CEO Michał Nowakowski responded to a question that's been echoing for two years: will there be an "Edgerunners" season 2? Despite earlier claims of the show being a one-time affair, Nowakowski hinted at continued exploration in animation. He cryptically added that more was on the horizon, but offered no further details.
In CDPR's past financial reports, the intention to transform both "Cyberpunk" and "The Witcher" into transmedia properties was evident[2]. For "Cyberpunk," the studio mentioned potential collaborations with Japanese studios to create additional anime set in the world of Mike Pondsmith's RPG setting. However, any potential projects might still be in the distant future as the studio gears up to focus most of its development attention on "The Witcher 4" (codenamed "Polaris"), while "Cyberpunk 2" (aka "Orion") remains in pre-production. Given the success of "Edgerunners" stemming from its release during "Cyberpunk 2077's" turnaround period, it's unlikely the studio would want another significant gap between the sequel and any potential new series.
Even without a second season, "Cyberpunk" is poised for growth beyond games. In 2021, CDPR announced a collaboration with Anonymous Content on a live-action TV show adaptation[5]. Unfortunately, since then, we haven't received any updates about its progress. Regardless, it seems the studio is on track to realize its dream of establishing "Cyberpunk" as a marquee franchise in the sci-fi realm.
