Canada's Express Entry Trade Category Expands, Offers Lower CRS Score
Canada's Express Entry system has revamped its Trade category, offering more opportunities for skilled workers. The overhaul, effective February 27, 2025, expanded the list of eligible occupations and lowered the required Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score.
The Trade category now boasts 25 eligible occupations, the most among all categories in 2025. New additions include Bricklayers, Cabinetmakers, and Concrete finishers, among others. Notably, apprentices in these trades also qualify, as they perform the same duties. To be eligible, one must have at least six months of full-time, continuous work experience in the same occupation within the past three years.
The CRS score required for category-based draws, like the Trade category, can be significantly lower than for general or Canadian Experience Class draws. For instance, in 2024, CRS cut-offs for general draws ranged between 524 and 549, while for the Trade category, it ranged between 433 and 436. This change increases the chances of receiving an invitation to apply for Canadian permanent residence through Express Entry for those who qualify.
The Trade category's expansion and the lower CRS score requirements present a significant opportunity for skilled workers. With 19 new occupations added and four removed, the category now offers more pathways to Canadian permanent residence. Applicants are advised to check the updated list of eligible occupations and work experience requirements.
