Canada sees the rollout of Rogers' Starlink-supported mobile service nationwide, offering a complimentary beta trial for all citizens

In a groundbreaking move, Rogers, Canada's leading telecommunications company, has unveiled its new satellite-to-mobile service - Rogers Satellite. Powered by SpaceX's Starlink Direct to Cell technology, this innovative service aims to bridge the connectivity gap in rural and remote areas of the country.

Starting from July 15, 2025, the service will be available for a free public beta until the end of October. After the beta period, it will cost $15 per month for non-Rogers Ultimate Plan customers. However, Rogers customers on the Ultimate Plan can enjoy the service for free.

Currently, the service supports sending SMS text messages even in remote areas with no traditional cell coverage. This is a significant step towards improving connectivity for those living, working, or travelling in areas not served by traditional mobile networks, as only 18% of Canada's landmass is currently covered.

While the initial focus is on text messaging, voice, data, and full app support are expected to roll out later this year. Voice services are anticipated to be introduced first, followed by data support and finally, full app support, enabling more comprehensive mobile functionality beyond basic messaging.

The service relies on low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites from Starlink. To use the service, users must be outdoors with a clear line of sight to the sky. This is unlike traditional cell coverage, which does not require such conditions.

Early beta participants will receive a $5 per month discount for 12 months if they subscribe afterward. The network now covers 5.4 million square kilometres, more than 2.5 times that of any other Canadian carrier.

Compatible smartphones for the service include the iPhone 13 (for Rogers customers only), iPhone 14, iPhone 15, iPhone 16, iPhone 17, Samsung Galaxy S25, Motorola razr 2025, Motorola razr Ultra 2025, Motorola razr+ 2024, and Motorola edge 2025.

Rogers Satellite is seen as a critical step towards improving connectivity in rural and remote areas of Canada. The service is expected to enhance safety and connectivity for those living, working, or travelling in these areas. More information about the service and the opportunity to sign up for the beta program can be found on the Rogers website.
