Boy under age 18 detained for developing deepfake artificial intelligence depicting lewd images of more than 50 schoolgirls

In a shocking turn of events, a teenage boy has been arrested for creating and disseminating AI-generated pornographic images of around 50 female students at Bacchus Marsh Grammar, a school located northwest of Melbourne, Australia. The school's principal, Andrew Neal, is providing support to the affected students and has expressed dismay over the situation.

Acting Principal Kevin Richardson of Bacchus Marsh Grammar has confirmed that the school is taking the matter seriously and has engaged Victoria police. Multiple students from Year 9 to Year 12 were targeted in this incident.

In an interview with ABC, Neal stated that the behavior is unacceptable, particularly its impact on young girls. He emphasized that the responsible party should face severe consequences for their actions. The images were created using the students' facial images sourced from social media and manipulated with artificial intelligence.

Emily, a parent at Bacchus Marsh Grammar and a trauma therapist, saw the deepfake images when she picked up her 16-year-old daughter from a sleepover. Emily's daughter was "sick to her stomach" and "very upset" upon seeing the images. Emily mentioned that her daughter's Instagram account was private, but there was a feeling of fear about potential future incidents.

The images were described as "incredibly graphic" by Emily, with one victim stating that she felt traumatized upon seeing the images, almost vomiting in response. The school affected is Bacchus Marsh Grammar, located northwest of Melbourne, Australia.

Victoria police are conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident. The perpetrator, a teenage boy, has since been released pending ongoing inquiries.

This incident is not isolated. Approximately 20 girls in a quiet town in southern Spain were previously victims of similar AI-generated nude images circulating online. The images produced are described as "obscene pornographic images," "mutilated," and "incredibly graphic."

Laws are evolving rapidly to address AI-generated child pornography. Perpetrators face felony charges with significant prison terms and penalties. For example, in the United States, Wisconsin classifies possession, production, or distribution of AI-generated child pornography as a Class D felony with penalties up to 25 years in prison and fines up to $100,000. Texas’s new laws criminalize the creation, possession, or promotion of AI-generated explicit images of minors as of September 2025.

Preventive measures in schools and broader policies extend to both legal frameworks and educational actions. Schools can adopt education programs focused on digital literacy, awareness of AI risks, and the ethical use of technology to help students understand the consequences of creating or sharing AI-generated explicit images.

Implementing strict digital policies banning the creation, possession, or distribution of non-consensual intimate or pornographic AI images involving students within school networks, supported by clear disciplinary consequences, is also crucial. Collaboration with law enforcement and technology platforms ensures early detection and swift action against those attempting to circulate illicit AI-generated images involving minors.

Payment platforms and technology companies are under increasing pressure from legal authorities to prevent being complicit by cutting off financial transactions linked to the creation or sale of deepfake pornography, which includes AI-generated illegal imagery of minors.

In conclusion, schools play a critical role in prevention through education, policy enforcement, and cooperation with legal authorities and tech platforms to combat the spread of AI-generated pornographic images of students. The community at Bacchus Marsh Grammar stands united in support of the affected students, calling for justice and a safer digital environment for all.
