Borderlands 4 Could Run on Xbox Ally X, Enthusiast Finds
Borderlands 4, the latest installment in the popular shooter series, has shown promising signs of running on integrated graphics, according to a gaming enthusiast who has spent hours testing the game on a mini PC. The author's findings suggest that, with further optimization, Borderlands 4 could potentially find its way onto handheld devices like the Xbox Ally X.
The author, using a mini PC equipped with an AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX370 and Radeon 890M GPU, found Borderlands 4 playable despite initial concerns. The mini PC's GPU is similar to the Z2 Extreme in the Xbox Ally X, raising hopes for the game's compatibility with the handheld device. However, the author acknowledges key differences between the mini PC and the Xbox Ally X, including CPU cores and power consumption, which could pose challenges for the game's performance on the handheld.
To achieve playable frame rates, the author employed AMD Radeon Super Resolution to upscale the game at 720p and low settings. This resulted in frame rates ranging from 40 to 50 FPS, demonstrating that, with optimization, Borderlands 4 could run smoothly on integrated graphics. The author is hopeful that, with continued work by the primary developer, Gearbox Software, Borderlands 4 could have a future on handheld devices like the Xbox Ally X.
While Borderlands 4 may present challenges for the new Xbox Ally X, the author's findings suggest that, with further optimization, the game could be playable on the handheld device. The author's use of AMD Radeon Super Resolution to achieve playable frame rates on a mini PC with similar graphics to the Xbox Ally X is a promising sign. As the primary developer, Gearbox Software, continues to work on the game's adaptation for the Xbox Series X|S, there is hope that Borderlands 4 could eventually find its way onto handheld devices, expanding its accessibility to gamers.
