In the heart of Bergkamen, Germany, a significant milestone is being reached in the creation of the Water City, a unique residential quarter. Gerrit Großmaas and his team have been working diligently on a section of the steel wall at the canal for a week now.
The steel wall, which separates the canal from the artificially created Adensee, is expected to be completely removed by the end of next week. Special divers, equipped with 60kg diving suits and multiple gloves for safety, are involved in this project.
Diver Thomas Hochstrate is currently cutting through the steel wall with a lance, a meticulous process that requires precise millimeter work. The divers work in depths of up to five meters for several hours at a time, communicating underwater via a device resembling a walkie-talkie.
Once the first section of the steel wall has been separated from the canal, it will be lifted out by a crane. If the steel is not completely cut, the work comes to a standstill.
The Water City project, which includes a residential area with up to 300 housing units planned on the old mining site, is scheduled to begin construction in 2027. In the future, boats will be able to travel from the lake up to the North Sea through this canal.
The work is being overseen by Gerrit Großmaas from a container on the shore of the Datteln-Hamm Canal. As the project progresses, the entire steel wall will be removed, marking a significant step forward in the development of Bergkamen's Water City.
