BMW is constructing a new battery plant in Irlbach-Straßkirchen, Germany, with the goal of achieving energy self-sufficiency and a substantial production boost. Investors are eager to see if this ambitious plan translates into a genuine location advantage.

The plant, slated to commence series production of sixth-generation batteries in 2026, will rely on a photovoltaic system to generate several thousand megawatt hours of electricity annually from then on. This, coupled with a central energy supply utilizing recovered waste heat, rainwater, and compressor waste heat feedback, will render the plant largely fossil fuel-free.

BMW's efficient processes are apparent in the swift implementation of this large project in Germany. The construction process employed digital planning and drone monitoring, underscoring the company's commitment to innovation. Safety is also a top priority, with the plant's fire department already operational before the first battery rolls off the production line.
