XChat: Twitter's New Direct Messaging System Set for Imminent Launch

Twitter, now known as X, is set to revolutionise the way users communicate on the platform with the imminent launch of XChat, a new direct messaging system. The announcement was confirmed by Nima Owji, who is associated with TechCrunch.

XChat promises to offer a seamless integration of instant messaging within the X platform, allowing users to interact effortlessly while using other X functions such as posting and following. The new system supports both one-on-one and group chats, boasting a sleek, improved user interface compared to the old DMs.

One of the standout features of XChat is the inclusion of audio and video calls, which do not require sharing phone numbers. Users can also share files of any type, going beyond the limitations of simple images or media.

Privacy-conscious users will appreciate the rumoured end-to-end encrypted messages, sometimes described as "bitcoin style" encryption, which is primarily available to paying X Premium subscribers. Another privacy feature is the option for vanishing messages, which automatically delete after a set time, and the unsend message option, allowing users to retract sent messages.

Enhanced blocking options, such as blocking DMs from specific users, are also part of the confirmed features. However, some advanced features, such as end-to-end encryption and vanishing messages, are currently only available to X Premium subscribers, and their availability is rolling out in select regions including the U.S., parts of Europe, India, and South Africa.

With XChat, X aims to transform from a basic social network into a more comprehensive “super app” with messaging at its core, competing with the likes of WhatsApp and Telegram while being fully integrated within the X social ecosystem.

Elon Musk's public statements suggest a possible intention to build a secure, Signal-like messenger into X, and the potential launch of XChat could be a sign of him delivering on that vision. The current direct messaging system on the platform may be replaced by XChat, marking a significant change in the way messaging functions on X.

Technology and artificial-intelligence are integral components of XChat, Twitter's new direct messaging system.
