Berlin's Friedrichshain to Get Safer Cycling Lanes in Major Street Redesign

Berlin's Friedrichshain district is set for a major street redesign. Petersburg Street will undergo a 2.5-year, 16 million euro project starting in September 2022. The aim? More space for cyclists and less for cars.

The Berlin Senate Department for the Environment, Transport and Climate Protection is behind this initiative. The current street layout, with three car lanes and narrow bike lanes, often leads to conflicts with parked cars. The plan is to reduce car lanes to two per direction and add right-turn lanes at intersections to keep traffic moving.

During construction, parking spots on the median will be removed, replaced by green spaces. Once complete, Petersburg Street will boast 2.5-meter-wide bike lanes on both sides, separated from sidewalks and parking spots by a 2.5-meter-wide green strip and a safety lane.

The redesign of Petersburg Street in Friedrichshain begins in September 2022, with an estimated completion in late 2024. The project, costing 16 million euros, will significantly improve cycling infrastructure and reduce car lanes, aiming to enhance safety and sustainability.
