Automotive manufacturer GWM's Tank division reveals the refurbished Tank 500 model
Great Wall Motor (GWM) has unveiled the updated Tank 500, a plug-in hybrid SUV that promises to compete strongly in the high-end plug-in hybrid SUV segment. The updated Tank 500 is set to launch later this quarter, with pre-sales beginning in China next month.
Power and Performance
The updated Tank 500 offers two powertrain options: the Hi4-T and Hi4-Z. The Hi4-T version features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 185 kW (248 hp), combined with an electric motor and a 9-speed hybrid automatic transmission, delivering a total system output of 300 kW (402 hp). The Hi4-Z variant, on the other hand, features the same 2.0T engine paired with dual electric motors and a 3-speed dedicated hybrid transmission, producing a combined output of 645 kW (865 hp) and a larger 59 kWh battery allowing for a pure electric range up to 201 km[1][2][3].
Key Features
Exterior dimensions of the updated Tank 500 include a length of 5,078 mm, a width of 1,934 mm, a height of 1,905 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,850 mm. The SUV boasts an off-road capability with a 29° approach angle, 24° departure angle, and 210 mm ground clearance. It also has a towing capacity of up to 2,500 kg.
The updated Tank 500 features refreshed styling with minor changes to the front grille and a new GWM badge. Inside, the vehicle offers Nappa leather ventilated and heated seats, rear-seat backrest adjustable between 25° and 35°, and advanced infotainment such as a 17.3-inch 3K ceiling-mounted entertainment screen with six control modes (voice, gesture, touch, remote).
Other notable features include a 50 W fridge with temperature control from -6°C to 50°C embedded in the center console, advanced driver assistance systems including lidar-based technologies, and a trunk capacity of up to 1,489 liters. The updated Tank 500 also comes with new color options, including Dunhuang Green, along with existing choices like Kunlun Gold, Pamir Silver, and Mount Everest White[1][2][3][4].
Pricing and Availability
Pre-sales for the updated Tank 500 in China began in August 2025, with prices starting around 335,000 yuan ($46,800) for the Hi4-T and 363,800 yuan ($50,900) for the Hi4-Z[1].
In addition to the updated Tank 500, Great Wall Motor's chairman has teased the development of a Ferrari-rivaling supercar. However, the details about this project are not yet disclosed.
