Australian Survey: Insiders and Cloud Top Cyber Risks, CRI Improves

In a recent survey, Australian respondents have highlighted negligent insiders and cloud computing infrastructure as top risks to their organization's infrastructure. Despite these concerns, cyber-risk levels have shown improvement, with the global cyber-risk index (CRI) moving into positive territory at +0.01.

The Australian cyber-risk index (CRI) also reflected this improvement, moving from -0.54 to -0.12 in the second half of 2022. This positive shift comes as organizations worldwide express concern about the persistent threat of insiders and the risks posed by negligent employees and remote work infrastructure.

Respondents listed clickjacking, ransomware, crypto-mining, and login attacks as the top four threats in the CRI 2H 2022. Despite these concerns, cyber-preparedness has improved in Europe and the Asia Pacific region, although it has declined slightly in North and Latin America. The greatest areas of concern remain people, process, and technology aspects of cyber-preparedness.

Organizations are now reporting on security to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). While there is cause for optimism with the improvement in cyber-risk levels, businesses must remain vigilant, particularly in relation to insider threats and the risks associated with remote work infrastructure. The pessimism expressed by many Australian organizations about their prospects over the coming year underscores the need for continued investment in cybersecurity measures.
