Artist Matt Stevens Transforms Films into Stunning Book Covers
Artist Matt Stevens has been transforming beloved movies into stunning book covers since 2012. His unique project began with a limited edition collection called 'Good Movies as Old Books', published by Chronicle Books in 2023.
Stevens, a self-proclaimed movie fan over a book enthusiast, draws inspiration from the movies he loves. His process involves watching each movie, often multiple times, to identify key frames or ideas that spark his creativity.
For his cover of 'PeeWee's Big Adventure', Stevens chose a Constructivist style, creating a unique composition that captures the movie's essence. He aims to create interesting combinations of styles and movie content, often experimenting with new techniques to avoid repetition. Despite preferring the low-fi feel of trade paperbacks, Stevens takes a case-by-case approach to decide between mass-market, hardcover, or other styles.
Stevens' work is entirely digital, but he uses found and scanned textures to maintain a real-world feel. His influences range from Penguin book covers to graphic design legends like Herb Lubalin and Paul Rand.
Matt Stevens' movie-to-book cover project has been ongoing since 2012, with his work showcasing a blend of creativity, craftsmanship, and a deep love for cinema. His unique perspective has resulted in a captivating collection of repurposed movie posters, each a testament to his artistic vision.
