Participatory AI Research & Practice Symposium (PAIRS) to Discuss Inclusive AI Development

The Participatory AI Research & Practice Symposium (PAIRS), organised by the Tech & Global Affairs Innovation Hub, is set to take place on February 8th, preceding the Paris AI Action Summit. The symposium aims to support a "participatory turn" in AI development and governance, empowering citizens and underrepresented communities.

PAIRS will bring together international researchers, policymakers, activists, and community organisers for a collaborative conversation on the conditions of public trust in AI systems. Key focus areas include ethical and inclusive AI governance, co-design and participatory methodologies in AI systems, human-centered AI implementation and cultural transformation, longitudinal studies on AI use and societal impact, and addressing bias, accountability, and trust in AI interfaces.

The symposium will feature three core tracks: Participatory AI Development, Participatory AI Governance, and Participation, Power, and Resistance. Notable speakers in the Participatory AI Development track include Tina M. Park, Ph.D. (Partnership on AI), Naftali Ndeapo Indongo (Namibia University of Science and Technology, UNESCO Chair for Indigenous Knowledge Research Cluster), and Jeremy Boy (UNDP).

The Participation, Power, and Resistance Panel will see the participation of Bobina Zulfa (Pollicy), Clarie Alspektor & David Mas (Make.org), Suzy Madigan (Responsible AI Lead, CARE International), Soizic Pénicaud (Independent), Sonam Jindal (Partnership on AI), Eloïse Gabadou, Andreas Katsanevas, Ali Cirone, Alice Siu, and Jess Heal (Meta), and Blair Attard-Frost (University of Toronto) & Ana Brandusescu (McGill University).

The concluding panel of the symposium will be graced by the presence of Jess Reia & Pedro Augusto Pereira Francisco (University of Virginia), Susan Aaronson (George Washington University), Estelle Hary (RMIT University), and Soizic Pénicaud (Independent). Additionally, Susan Aaronson will also be participating in the preliminary online session on January 30, which is being organized for speakers unable to travel to ensure diversity and inclusivity at the PAIRS symposium.

For more detailed information about the PAIRS symposium’s objectives, focus areas, and attendees, we recommend consulting the official PAIRS event website or contacting the organizing body directly.

Artificial-intelligence research and development will be at the heart of discussions at the Participatory AI Research & Practice Symposium (PAIRS), as speakers such as Tina M. Park from the Partnership on AI will delve into participatory methodologies in AI systems. The symposium will explore ethical and inclusive AI governance, highlighting the potential of technology to transform cultural norms and empower underrepresented communities.
