The latest update to the Google app, version 16.30, introduces AI Mode to Android tablets, offering a more unified and powerful search experience. This update, currently in beta, leverages Google's Gemini AI technology to deliver advanced AI-driven search capabilities.

Key updates include:

  • Improved AI Search: With the new AI Mode, tablet users can expect advanced AI-powered search capabilities, boasting improved relevance, accuracy, and deep reasoning. This includes Google's "Deep Search" feature, which synthesises comprehensive, fully cited reports.
  • Access and Interface Improvements: The AI Mode shortcut is now prominently displayed at the top of the Home and Discover tabs. It can also be accessed from the Pixel Launcher and home screen widgets, and toggled via app settings. The interface supports image uploads and integrates Google Lens, allowing users to interact with images in AI queries.
  • Optimised Tablet Experience: While the AI Mode UI mirrors the phone version, the portrait orientation offers better usability, and the desktop-style response layout enhances clarity and visual richness. However, landscape mode is not yet fully optimised, with some stretched UI elements.
  • Productivity Enhancements: Integration with AI tools like Google Notebook aims to enhance research and productivity by combining notebook resources with wider internet information.
  • Availability: Initially tested on Pixel Tablets, this update is rolling out to more Android tablets, bridging the functionality gap between tablets and phones for AI-powered search experiences.

In summary, the Google app 16.30 beta delivers a more unified, powerful AI search experience on Android tablets, featuring Gemini AI integration, image and Lens capabilities, and UI improvements tailored for tablet use. Some UI elements still need refinement, especially in landscape mode, but overall user experience is smoother and richer than previous options like browser-based access.
