Apple unveils 25 compelling reasons for iPhone users to upgrade to iOS 18.6

Apple has recently released the latest update for its iOS operating system, version 18.6, on May 12, 2023. This update brings a host of improvements and fixes, primarily focusing on system stability, performance, and security.

The update addresses potential issues that could reveal sensitive user information or display false web address information when visiting a malicious website. One third of the 24 security updates in iOS 18.6 are related to WebKit, which underpins Safari. This enhancement aims to provide a safer browsing experience for users.

In addition, iOS 18.6 addresses accessibility issues such as a VoiceOver passcode reading issue and incorrect privacy indicator display. These improvements are designed to make the iOS experience more inclusive for all users.

The update is compatible with a wide range of iPhone models, including the iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, iPhone 12 mini, 12, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max, iPhone 13 mini, 13, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max, iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max, iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max, 16e, and the second- and third-generation iPhone SE models.

iOS 18.6 also fixes an issue in the Photos app that could prevent memory movies from being shared. This update is a large-sized one, approximately 1.07GB on the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Apple urges users to update to iOS 18.6 due to the security updates and fixes. The last iOS update was released more than 11 weeks prior to this one, making the update particularly noteworthy.

Looking ahead, the next expected iOS update is likely to be iOS 26 in September, unless there are any issues that need to be addressed due to this release. iOS 26, currently in public beta, will only be compatible with iPhone 11 series and later models. This could potentially mark the last time the words "iOS 26" are used in a compatibility list, as future iOS versions may only be compatible with newer iPhone models.

As always, it is recommended to back up your device before updating to ensure your data remains safe during the update process. To update to iOS 18.6, open the Settings app, choose General, then Software Update, and click on Download and Install.
