Animals and AI: A Potential Dialogue Breakthrough, Bringing Up Ethical Questions

In a groundbreaking development, the Earth Species Project (ESP), a nonprofit organisation using AI to translate animal communication, is partnering with experts to establish ethical guidelines for the use of this technology. The goal is to ensure that the tool is used primarily for conservation and animal welfare, rather than exploitation or harm.

César Rodríguez-Garavito, a professor of clinical law and the founding director of the More Than Human Rights (MOTH) Project at NYU School of Law, is leading the charge. Rodríguez-Garavito has raised concerns about the potential harm to animals during the "playback" stage, as well as the cultural and individual shock that may occur when animals receive disembodied messages.

The technology, if successful, could have profound implications. It could change our relationship with animals, potentially revealing new ways of seeing the world. Understanding animals' inner worlds could also provide a new and impactful kind of evidence in animal rights cases. However, it also raises ethical concerns about its potential misuse.

For instance, the technology could be used to influence or control animals, such as luring bees to certain locations or disorienting whales for ecotourism. To prevent such misuse, the guidelines being developed by Rodríguez-Garavito will emphasise respect for animal sentience, transparency, and accountability.

The guidelines will also prioritise animal welfare and sentience, ensuring AI systems recognise animals as sentient beings with interests and preferences. Ethical guidelines will embed respect for animal cognitive and emotional states, ensuring AI tools prioritise conservation and welfare goals without enabling manipulation or behavioural control for exploitative purposes.

The team behind ESP is aware of the ethical implications of their work and includes experts to help prevent negative impacts. Katie Zacarian, the cofounder of ESP, has emphasised the need for global ethical frameworks specifically governing AI use related to animals. These frameworks should ensure AI outputs are scientifically validated and not misleading to prevent harm caused by misinterpretation.

The guidelines, once adopted by technology companies, can be described as soft law and may evolve into hard law. The potential of AI to change our relationship to the Earth and upend the anthropocentric worldview is immense. By establishing ethical guidelines now, we can ensure that this technology is used for the benefit of all species, rather than just humans.
