An Giang Province Leads Marine Aquaculture Shift to HDPE Cages

An Giang Province is transforming its marine aquaculture industry with a shift towards high-density polyethylene (HDPE) floating cages. This move, piloted by local entrepreneur Tô Diễm Thúy, aims to boost sustainability and productivity while reducing environmental impact.

Thúy, who has been breeding marine fish in floating cages for over two decades, has seen firsthand the challenges of small-scale operations. With a mortality rate of up to 30% due to water pollution and unclear fry origins, the switch to HDPE cages promises improved efficiency and reduced environmental strain.

The province, with its extensive coastline and fishing grounds, is well-suited for aquaculture. It plans to install 14,000 floating cages by 2030, producing 105,720 tonnes of fish, including 6,600 high-tech cages. This ambitious project aims to make An Giang a national hub for marine aquaculture.

The province has already made strides in this direction. It has issued identification codes for breeding facilities and licences for product traceability. This year, it targets 4,550 cages producing 5,150 tonnes, with 18 models for converting wooden cages to HDPE ones being piloted. Farmers hope for preferential loans to invest in these modern cages.

The shift to HDPE floating cages in An Giang Province signals a commitment to sustainable marine aquaculture. With clear targets and supportive policies, the province is poised to become a national leader in this sector, benefiting both the local economy and the environment.
