Amazon, X-energy Team Up to Power AI with SMRs by 2039

Amazon and X-energy have joined forces to create a supportive ecosystem for X-energy reactor delivery, with Doosan ensuring manufacturing capabilities. The agreement, signed by X-energy, Amazon, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), and Doosan Enerbility, aims to expedite the deployment of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and TRISO-X fuel in the US.

The collaboration focuses on establishing and deploying X-energy's fourth-generation reactor, aligning with the Trump administration's nuclear objectives. Amazon Web Services plans to enable over five gigawatts of new nuclear energy in the US through this partnership, with the deployment target set for 2039. The initiative aims to meet the increasing power demands of data centers and AI operations, specifically powering Amazon Web Services' AI data centers.

The agreement involves reactor engineering, construction strategy, supply chain development, investment plans, long-term operations, and worldwide AI-nuclear deployment exploration. It supports X-energy's current partnerships with Korean strategic partners, including DL E&C. X-energy is also progressing with its initial Xe-100 implementation at Dow's UCC Seadrift Operations, supported by the US Department of Energy.

The partnership between Amazon, X-energy, KHNP, and Doosan Enerbility is expected to significantly contribute to the US's nuclear energy capacity. With a target deployment date of 2039, the collaboration aims to meet the growing energy demands of data centers and AI operations, ensuring a sustainable and reliable power source for the future.
