Amazon Prime Day 2025: Cybercriminals on the Prowl
Amazon Prime Day, an annual shopping event, is once again attracting cybercriminals. Scams, phishing attempts, and fake websites are on the rise, targeting not just Amazon, but also other popular brands. To stay safe, users and companies must be vigilant and proactive.
Cybercriminals are employing sophisticated tactics to deceive users. They create convincing fake notifications about suspended Amazon Prime memberships and unauthorized payment alerts. Additionally, they set up convincing fake websites to trick users into entering passwords or credit card details. During Amazon Prime Day, these attacks increase significantly.
Last year, Amazon-related phishing campaigns remained high, with Walmart being the most frequent target (39% of phishing attempts), followed by Microsoft (14%) and Wells Fargo (8%). Attackers used confusing or deceptive domains to mimic legitimate sites and trick users into entering sensitive information.
To protect against these threats, companies should employ a multi-layered security approach. This includes protecting emails, devices, and networks from phishing attacks. Users can also take precautions. Be cautious with emails around Amazon Prime Day, verify domain names, avoid links and attachments, use multi-factor authentication, and keep security software up-to-date. In the first three weeks of September alone, 727 new Amazon-related domains were registered, with about one in 18 being malicious or suspicious.
As Amazon Prime Day approaches, it's crucial for both users and companies to be proactive in protecting against cyber threats. By staying vigilant, employing technical protective measures, and using common sense, we can all enjoy safe shopping during this annual event.
