Amazon debuts augmented reality presentation for Champions League broadcasts
Amazon Prime Video Revamps Sports Broadcasting with Data-Driven, AR-Enhanced Coverage
Amazon Prime Video is making waves in the world of sports broadcasting, introducing a new pay-per-view service and an augmented-reality (AR) and data-enhanced broadcast mode. This innovative approach aims to revolutionise the viewing experience for sports enthusiasts, particularly those with a keen interest in statistics, tactics, and in-depth analysis.
The tech giant has secured the exclusive broadcast rights to the Wimbledon Tennis Championships for Germany and Austria, starting in 2024 and lasting for four years. This marks a significant shift, as Amazon replaces Sky in broadcasting the prestigious tournament.
Meanwhile, in the UK, Amazon is launching a new pay-per-view service for Ligue 1 matches. Viewers can expect to access a wealth of information, including player names, sprint speeds, pass distances, ball speeds, expected goals (xG) metrics, live positioning maps of all players, and momentum indicators. Up to three Ligue 1 matches will be available each weekend on the new service, but the price for a single match has yet to be disclosed.
This data-driven approach is not new to Amazon. In the United States, Prime Vision, their AR and data-enhanced broadcast mode, made its debut during the Champions League clash between Tottenham and Vilarreal in 2023. The service has since won an Emmy, demonstrating its success and potential.
Amazon's new mode also plans to further roll out coverage into Germany and Italy. Notable matches such as Le Classique between Paris St Germain and Marseilles will be available for viewers to enjoy.
In the realm of football in the UK, Amazon has secured the exclusive broadcast rights to the Premier League. Three agreements for the four-year period starting from an unspecified date have been reached, with TNT Sports and BBC Sport also retaining their existing rights. Interestingly, Sky will broadcast all 10 matches on the final day of the Premier League season under a new agreement.
This innovative approach to sports broadcasting is designed to appeal to younger or data-oriented viewers, drawing inspiration from video games. The technology is driven by camera/sensor systems similar to those used in NFL Next Gen Stats, providing additional stats, graphics, and AR-style visualizations over the live match feed.
With these new initiatives, Amazon is poised to redefine the sports viewing experience, offering deeper insights and making the experience more engaging for fans who crave a more immersive and informative experience.
