AI serving as a conversational ethicist?

In a unique fusion of science and art, the play "The Third Voice" (German: "Die dritte Stimme") premiered at the Amerikahaus Munich in May. This production, under the MoralPLai project, connects scientific research with artistic practice, and is supported by the Klaus Tschira Foundation.

The MoralPLai project, led by Dr. Franziska Poszler, is primarily focused on exploring the influence of AI-driven chatbots on ethical decisions and their responsible use. The project's communication consultant, Anastasia Aritzi, stated that the MoralPLai project was designed to facilitate a dialogue between science, politics, business, and civil society.

At the heart of the play is AITHONA, a chatbot that enters human dialogues where a counterpart is missing. The play tells two intertwined stories about a doctor standing trial for consulting an AI chatbot in advising a terminally ill patient, and a daughter seeking emotional support from the same system.

The Klaus Tschira Foundation, founded by physicist and SAP co-founder Klaus Tschira in 1995, has three funding priorities: education, research, and science communication. Verena Viarisio, program manager for science communication at the Klaus Tschira Foundation, emphasizes the potential of the MoralPLai project in making research accessible.

Carys Kresny, the director of the play, believes that theater can help actively shape our future instead of just waiting for it. According to Kresny, the play addresses topics such as echo chambers, biased training data, responsibility diffusion, and "hallucinations" of AI based on current scientific findings and data collected specifically for research.

The goal for the audience is to leave the play feeling that their voice plays a role in the development and use of AI. The audience's reactions, assessments, and experiences are collected and fed back into scientific research, politics, and economics.
