Autodesk University 2025 saw the introduction of a groundbreaking AI tool, Autodesk's Flow Studio, presented by its founder, Nikola Todorovic. Originally built as an integration into Maya, Flow Studio has since been integrated into Autodesk in 2023.

Nikola Todorovic, a VFX artist and supervisor who grew up in the former Yugoslavia and moved to the U.S. at 20, founded Flow Studio with a mission to make filmmaking more accessible. Recognising the difficulties of breaking into the industry and securing funding, Todorovic aimed to create a solution that empowers indie creators and smaller production companies.

Flow Studio addresses a common issue faced by filmmakers when using generative video models: the lack of necessary controls. By separating models for character, camera, environment, and lighting, it provides filmmakers with the fine-tuned control they need to bring their visions to life.

Todorovic stated that while generative models are excellent at creating images, they lack the controls filmmakers require. He believes that Flow Studio's approach, which delivers not just a rendered video but the metadata that makes the render usable inside a 3D scene, is a significant step forward.

The roadmap for Flow Studio includes merging with other content tools, such as MotionMaker and FaceAnimator, within Autodesk. This integration aims to deliver data pipelines needed for filmmakers, allowing them to practice their craft more often.

Flow Studio's new tiered pricing model includes a 'freemium' license, making it accessible for a wider range of creators. Todorovic believes in the importance of traditional editing methods and does not want to eliminate shooting on set. He does not see generative AI tools as a threat to filmmakers but rather as a tool that can raise the bar for what they can imagine and build.

Todorovic does not believe in the future of synthetic movies where actors are replaced by their likenesses. Instead, he expects a gradual shift in the film industry due to the use of generative AI tools, with advertising and music videos leading the way, followed by feature work.

Flow Studio is not a one-click generator for viral clips. It is an AI tool designed for filmmaking, separating tasks into cameras, characters, and lights. By doing so, it empowers filmmakers to maintain creative control while leveraging the power of AI to streamline their workflows.

In larger studio contexts, Flow Studio is already being used, but Todorovic is particularly excited about its potential impact on indie creators and smaller production companies. With its user-friendly pricing model and focus on maintaining creative control, Flow Studio is set to revolutionise the film industry for the better.
