Meta Opens Doors for Real Money Gaming Advertising in India
Advertising Policy Overhaul Welcomed by AIGF in Meta's Announcement
Embracing the tide of change, social media giant Meta has decided to allow real money gaming (RMG) operators in India to advertise on its platforms under specific conditions. This shift in policy marks a significant step towards legitimizing and streamlining RMG advertising in the country.
As per new guidelines introduced by Meta on Thursday, RMG advertisers must obtain the platform's written approval before running any ads. Consequently, these advertisements will not be targeted at individuals below the age of 18[1][3]. By setting these restrictions, Meta aims to cultivate a responsible and accountable digital environment for RMG advertising.
Roland Landers, CEO of the All India Gaming Federation (AIGF), lauded Meta's move, noting that the new framework mirrors the Indian regulatory environment more closely. This policy change reflects a shift towards increased transparency and accountability within the digital gaming sphere[5].
Mr. Landers highlighted that AIGF has been advocating for self-regulation and legality in the gaming industry for almost a decade. The organization has even developed the most exhaustive voluntary skill game certification process in India, rooted in legal validation and integrity[5]. AIGF is pleased that Meta now recognizes AIGF-issued certificates as a valid proof of legality and skill-based classification of games.
The AIGF is the apex industry body for online gaming in India, representing over 120 members across various gaming formats[6]. Its significant influence extends to startups and even established entities in the gaming sector. With a combined user base of 40 crore digital Nagriks and a total valuation exceeding $10 billion, AIGF continues to promote progressive policies that foster a secure, fair, and responsible gaming ecosystem[6].
Furthermore, Meta's policy change signifies a collaborative effort between industry bodies and technological platforms. This move is expected to facilitate responsible and structured growth within the digital advertising environment[5].
