Adobe and Boris FX Team Up: Introducing Multi-Frame Rendering and Mocha AE Enhancements

In a significant move to enhance the post-production experience, Adobe has released a new version of After Effects, incorporating Multi-Frame Rendering (MFR) and an updated version of Mocha AE. This update comes with the backing of Boris FX, whose current shipping versions of Sapphire 2021.5, Continuum 2021.5, and Mocha Pro 2022 also support MFR.

The implementation of MFR in Boris FX plugins brings about a substantial improvement in After Effects performance. By leveraging parallel frame rendering and GPU acceleration, MFR distributes processing across multiple CPU cores simultaneously. This results in snappier playback, faster rendering, and better utilization of system resources. The performance boost is noticeable, particularly when using Boris FX Continuum plugins within After Effects, leading to a noticeable boost in speed and responsiveness.

The Boris FX Continuum Complete plugins are fully GPU-accelerated and support Adobe's MFR, allowing After Effects to process several frames in parallel rather than sequentially. This enhancement leads to faster render times and smoother interaction within the FX Editor, benefiting complex effects workflows, especially in high-resolution or long compositions.

Boris FX's support for native Apple M1 chips further enhances performance on Apple Silicon hardware through optimized multi-threading and GPU acceleration.

Tests conducted on a Windows 10 computer with an i7-7700K processor, 32GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA RTX2080Ti graphics card showed significant render speed increases across all three Boris FX products when using MFR. Specifically, the Sapphire Lighting Filters saw a 69% speed increase, Continuum Primatte Studio (Keying) a 61% increase, Continuum Beauty Studio a 94% increase, Mocha Pro Power Mesh Insert a 49% increase, and Mocha Pro Remove Module a 60% increase.

The updated Mocha AE includes a new and improved AdjustTrack module. Adobe Media Encoder also supports After Effects MFR projects, resulting in faster renders and exports.

A short video demonstrating the basics of using AdjustTrack for better planar tracking and rotoscoping in After Effects is available, featuring senior product specialist Mary Poplin. The speed increases are expected to improve further in upcoming 2022 releases of the Boris FX products.

In summary, the collaboration between Adobe and Boris FX in implementing Multi-Frame Rendering in their plugins substantially improves After Effects performance by leveraging parallel frame rendering and GPU acceleration, providing a more efficient and fluid post-production experience.

Data-and-cloud-computing technology plays a crucial role in enabling the performance improvements seen in Adobe's After Effects, as the Multi-Frame Rendering (MFR) implementation relies on cloud computing resources for parallel processing and GPU acceleration.

With the backing of technology in data-and-cloud computing, Adobe's updated After Effects version, along with supporting Boris FX plugins, delivers snappier playback, faster rendering, and better utilization of system resources.
