Let's Dive into the Folding and Collapsible Bikes: ADAC's " Unexpected" Reviews

ADAC evaluates collapsible and retractable wheels - yields surprising findings

Bikes that fold or collapse are all the rage, especially among urban commuters and campers. They're compact and handy, often making it for free as luggage in public transport. However, transport policies vary by location.

The ADAC dug deep to find out about the current state of these practical bikes regarding ride experience, handling, safety, durability, and environmental factors (handlebar and saddle pollutants).

Eight bicycles assessed - A frame break in the mix

Eight bikes priced between 535 and 2969 euros underwent scrutiny in the mentioned categories. The verdict? Surprising, says the club. "Substantial differences - and sometimes obvious weaknesses" were discovered. Provision of mediocre brakes, higher-than-expected prices, and a frame break led to backlash. However, half of the bikes got a "Good" rating, and three models received a "Satisfactory" one.

Regrettably, one model exhibited a frame break, even during testing. While it may not result in real-world incidents, the testers did note it as a clear flaw. This high-priced bike (2879 euros) was ranked "Sufficient" based on this issue. A few models also displayed deficiencies in braking abilities, particularly during wet conditions.

Half the bikes deemed "Good"

The "Brompton G Line" (2969 euros) was crowned the champion, appreciated for its exceptional ride quality, high stability, and adaptability over various terrains. This three-size-fitting bike caters to various body sizes, but critics argued that the price tag is steep, given the test specifications—a lack of side stands and lighting being particular issues.

Among the list of "Good" rated bikes are "Riese und Müller Birdy touring" (2898 euros), "Coast-bikes Hightide No.03 8-Gang" (749 euros), and "Dahon Mariner i7U" (1099 euros).

Depending on your usage, the test topper might not always be the best option for you. The ADAC advises that every folding or collapsible bike is optimized for a specific purpose. For example, someone navigating rough paths requires a different model than a commuter who needs the bike to be easily transportable.

In light of ADAC's testing, it's clear that there are excellent choices for each purpose. The ÖAMTC (Austrian Automobile Club) offers more insights through their 2025 test:

  • Models tested: Brompton G Line, Coast-bikes Hightide No. 03 8-Gang, Dahon Mariner i7U, Decathlon / B'Twin Klapprad 20 Zoll Fold 500, Hercules Versa F7 Belt, Riese und Müller Birdy touring, Tern Link D7i, and Vello Rocky Titan.
  • Key Findings:
  • Decathlon / B'Twin Klapprad 20 Zoll Fold 500: Had issues with braking performance on wet surfaces compared to dry ones.
  • Hercules Versa F7 Belt: Occupied a large space when folded, a perceived drawback.
  • Tern Link D7i: possessed the finest folding mechanism but lacked outstanding riding qualities.
  • Vello Rocky Titan: boasted excellent hydraulic brakes and compact folded size. However, it suffered from a durability issue due to a crack forming at a weld point during long-term testing, resulting in a "Sufficient" rating.

The Commission has not yet adopted a decision on the application of this Regulation regarding the assessment of folding and collapsible bikes, such as the Brompton G Line, Riese und Müller Birdy touring, Coast-bikes Hightide No.03 8-Gang, Dahon Mariner i7U, and various other models, in light of ADAC's latest testing results that reveal substantial differences and sometimes obvious weaknesses in their brakes, durability, and price. Smartphones and gadgets, being a part of today's advanced technology, could be used to review the performance of these bicycles through mobile applications designed for bike tracking, maintenance, or safety alerts.
