5G+ network expansion in UAE bolsters the country's smart city aspirations and supports innovation among fledgling businesses
In the bustling cityscape of Dubai, telecom operator Du is making waves with its latest upgrade. The company, formerly known as Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company, has announced the rollout of its 5G+ network.
The "+" on 5G+ signifies an enhanced version, indicating a speedier version of 5G. This evolution of the 5G network uses different technologies for varying internet speeds. If a network symbol on a smartphone shows "5G+", it represents a speedier version of 5G being used by that device.
Du's 5G+ network is designed to transform the mobile experience, featuring faster speeds, enhanced performance, lower latency, and seamless connectivity. The improved network is expected to provide a better overall experience, according to Du's chief commercial officer, Karim Benkirane. In fact, it's anticipated to offer up to double the current speeds on its network.
The initial rollout of Du's 5G+ network will be in main landmarks and downtown areas across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and other emirates. While the exact launch date is yet to be announced, coverage for the 5G+ network will be expanded to more locations before the end of 2025.
This upgrade is not just about faster internet for consumers. Du's 5G+ network is also intended to help start-ups innovate and is designed to help the UAE's government deliver on its agendas, particularly in areas like smart cities and sustainability. The improved network is beneficial for promoters and creators who are using artificial intelligence and shaping the future in real-time.
The iPhone Air, a new addition to the Apple family, is among the devices that will benefit from Du's upgraded 5G+ network. At Du's iPhone launch event, orders for the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air have demonstrated high demand with early adopters continuing to grow.
The 5G+ has already been rolled out in other parts of the world, most notably in the US, where AT&T launched one of its earliest versions in 2021. Du's 5G+ network is available on compatible devices with the corresponding SIMs and eSIMs.
As Dubai and the UAE continue to push the boundaries of technological innovation, Du's 5G+ network is set to play a significant role in shaping the future of connectivity in the region.
